A celebrity makeup artist revealed the common mistakes people make when making their own nails-including not using cuticle oil correctly and not preparing nails before manicure.

Amy Hide, who has painted nails for leading celebrities such as Harry Styles and edited for Vogue, was interviewed by FEMAIL. She also shared that wearing rubber gloves and avoiding supermarket manicure sets when cleaning is the best way to extend perfect nails.

Amy has been in the nail industry for ten years and works at Paint Nails London in the hot beauty club of celebrity salons on Oxford Street.

Amy also works at Paint Nail Studio in the Celebrity Salon Hot Beauty Club on Oxford Street, which is described as similar in style to the Beverly Hills Hotel

Paint Nails London, with stylish pink walls and a fully functional bar, was founded by nail artist Angel Gaffney (who was Harrods nail salon manager for 12 years) and hair extension expert Louise Bailey.

Paint has been rated as one of London's top salons by dozens of magazines-Glamour recently described it as an "absolute aesthetic paradise" with the "atmosphere of the Los Angeles Beverly Hills Hotel".

It has become a hot spot for influencers including Verity Bowditch, Anna Vakili, Chloe Khan and Jessica Alves-while they also do manicures at an exclusive party hosted by Boohoo.

Here, Amy reveals how to perfect your nails-from the best way to exfoliate the cuticle to using a reputable salon.

'Preparation is the key to any nail service. Not only for beauty, but also for longevity," Amy explained.

'Two important functions are to ensure that you use the cuticle pusher to push out the dead cuticle/protein from the nail plate and lightly polish it with a white polishing block.

'The second step is to clean, wipe or wash off any dust/debris, and then use a lint-free pad or even kitchen paper and nail cleaner or acetone to wipe the natural nails. This will ensure that the product adheres correctly to natural nails.

The Holly Woolf nail technician at the famous London salon Neville Hair & Beauty told FEMAIL her important secret to avoid bad nails.

'Never file your nails back and forth

Instead, always file your nails in one direction, moving back and forth may cause the nails to become soft and brittle.

Do not apply the color directly on the nails

Instead, apply a primer to protect the nails. You can also improve the health of your nails by applying a suitable primer to your nails, whether for nail strength or moisturizing.

Don't take off your gel

Doing so will cause the top layer of the nails to peel off, thereby damaging the nails, making them brittle and easy to break, so you should soak or seek professional help.

Biting your nails is not only unsightly, but also spreads unwanted bacteria into your mouth.

The same is true for plucking the skin around the nail, as this can cause pain and infection. Always seek professional help

Always try to apply a thin polish. If it has streaks or needs more coverage, add a third layer of light pressure coating.

Never peel off your gel nails

'Peeling off your gel or enhancement is a huge no no!

"I know that if you unfortunately pick up a chip, lift or split in the area after wearing it for a few weeks, it's tempting, but I always tell my clients this.

'Each time you peel off your nails, one layer will be removed, so next time your nails will not last that long (nail products will not reach their full potential on damaged nails) and the cycle will start again!

No daily cuticle oil

Amy added: "Use cuticle oil to nourish your nails every day-I recommend the well-known brand of dadi'oil, and contact your manicurist for the correct removal or repair."

'Daily cuticle oil, your manicurist will always say that, we don't say that for it!

'Using cuticle oil every day can not only make your natural nails and skin look healthy, but also keep your skin soft, reduce the chance of nails hanging, and the natural nails under your gel or enhancer will be nourished and flexible.

Wear gloves when washing

"Always protect your nails" is the first rule. Wear gloves when cleaning and washing. Don't use your nails as a tool, such as tearing off annoying tags from a new flowerpot you just brought.

Be careful with family nails

"As the "home kits" of high street pharmacies and online retailers become saturated, we have seen a significant increase in the number of damaged nails.

'This is caused by over-archiving, incorrect application and removal of the product, and sometimes even the product itself.

'Think of it this way, the hair dye kit at home will never be the same as the professional color.

'If you choose to do gels or enhancements at home, please take a course from a reputable college or your favorite brand.

Go to salons with good brands and rave reviews

'Always look for salons with honest reviews and use of well-known brand products.

"Brands like CND, NSI and Artistic are always worth paying attention to.

'Ensure that you can view the qualifications of team members and can communicate with you to provide you with suitable nail suggestions based on the appearance and results you want.

"For me, the red flags are high employee turnover, mixed product brands and restricted payment methods, such as cash payment'.
